What would you say if I told you that the early Christians didn’t spend a lot of their time talking about eternal life? Now to be clear, the early disciples absolutely knew that Jesus had been raised from the dead and firmly believed that through faith in the Risen Lord they too would have eternal life. No one needed convincing; it was simply what they knew to be true by the teachings of the apostles and the beliefs of the early Christian communities. I profess so every time I recite the Apostles’ Creed, and so do you. While this creed is not contained within the Sunday liturgy every week, it is a part of Daily Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, and we do pray this creed corporately within our liturgies for Baptism and the Burial Rite. The Church recognizes for its clergy that there are also times when it is good for them to take an extended time of rest, to separate from the parish community for a time, and return refreshed and re-energized.

In 1952, the Church building and the Parish House (built in 1948) were badly damaged by fire. The Church was enlarged when it was rebuilt, and in 1959, a Youth Building was added. The votes reverse prohibitive policies toward LGBTQ people taken on at the denomination’s 2019 General Convention, when delegates doubled down and tightened bans on gay clergy and same-sex marriage. Today, however, St. Martin's is active and growing, with members of all ages, coming from a wide geographic area. People who attend St. Martin's today are here because of a strong commitment to outreach, emphasis on Christian formation and education programs for children, youth, and adults, and a commitment to radical Christian hospitality.

In 2003, the Vestry and Clergy of Saint Margaret’s realized that a new, bigger home was needed. At that time, the Church undertook a Capital Campaign to raise money to build a new home. One of the many things I am thankful for at our parish are the good people who have come before us, who have sacrificed so much and given us this beautiful setting in order that we might gather and worship the Risen Lord. Not only can this building not be hidden, but the witness that springs forth from its walls cannot be stopped as we strive together to follow Jesus and help build His Kingdom on Earth as it is in Heaven. In a world that is changing so rapidly, the way forward at Saint Margaret’s is to embrace the ancient disciplines of the church that have formed disciples for over two millennia. 30, yet what has sustained God’s people in their common life has been the proven traditions of worship, prayer, service, and the sharing of the Good News of Jesus.
